Mechanical Specification
Factors of Safety
The JAS mechanical structure shall have strength margins of safety greater than zero when calculated from analytically derived structural loads. The factors of safety (FS), shown in the first table below, and test load factors, shown in the second table below, shall be applied to the limit loads.
All laminated or compression molded composite components or structural bonded joints shall be proof tested.
 | With Qual or Protoflight Testing | Without Qual or Protoflight Testing |
Ultimate FS Metal | 1.50 | 2.00 |
Ultimate FS Composite | 1.5 | 2.00 |
Ultimate FS Bond Joints | 1.73 | 2.30 |
Yield FS Metal | 1.32 | 1.60 |
Yield FS Composite | N/A | N/A |
Yield FS Bond Joints | N/A | N/A |

Test Factors
The limit load shall be multiplied by a factor of safety of 1.10 for Proof and Prototype Testing, 1.32 for yield, and 1.5 for ultimate.
No factor of safety shall be applied to any load component that increases structural capability. Additional factors to account for load path uncertainties, stress concentrations, or cyclic loading shall be applied as appropriate.
